British Man Sets Record For Traveling Across Australia On Skateboard
A British man has become the first person to travel 3,000 miles across Australia on a skateboard. Graphic designer Dave Cornwaithe, from Swansea, England took five months or exactly 90 days to complete his new world record.
The 27-year-old Cornthwaite has become a minor celebrity in Australia for his feat and was nicknamed "Crazy Pom."
The tired and sore record holder skated into Sydney's Olympic Park after leaving Perth, Australia on August 24 for the 3,000 miles trip for charity. He broke the previous record held by American skater Jack Smith and was able to raise some $125,000 for charity.
He said, "I think my team has to have a big hand in this, they've given up their jobs and they've given up everything they've known to literally come along and follow a bloke on a yellow skateboard travel across Australia."
"They've kept me sane and they've kept me going and I'm absolutely determined to finish this."
Cornthwaite first took skateboarding less than two years ago and traveled from the U.K. to negotiate Australia's harshest terrain, including the Nullarbor Plain, the Great Ocean Road and the heartbreaking hills on the NSW south coast.
"I wasn't too happy with life and felt I needed a change of direction and woke up one morning and thought I'm going to go on a long journey on my board," he said.
"I didn't know exactly what I had facing me ... and because it's all brand new it helps me keep going."
