Mountains of mail: Today is Postal Service's busiest

With more than 900 million pieces of mail expected to be posted, today is the busiest day of the year for mail.

From loads of boxed presents and holiday cards to tons of care packages to military installations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 700,000 postal service employees across the country will have their hands full today.

Today is the deadline to be sure first-class mail is delivered before Christmas.

Already into the Hanukkah celebration, and a week away from Christmas and the start of Kwanzaa, people with holiday mailing plans should prepare for longer waits at the local post office.
