Number of broadband subscribers surpasses 2 mln.: ITU Internet report

The number of world broadband subscribers reached 216 million in 2005, according to the Internet Report launched by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on Wednesday.

The report, titled "digital.life," revealed that mobile broadband services had been launched in some 60 economies at the end of 2005, logging 62 million mobile broadband users.

The report noted that the Internet has radically transformed business and individual lifestyle, enabling people to create and share information and knowledge instantly on a global scale.

The report was drafted by a team of analysts from ITU's Strategy and Policy Unit, covering chapters on "going digital," lifestyle, business, identity and living in the digital world.

It was launched on the sidelines of the ongoing ITU Telecom World 2006 show, which was slated from Dec. 4 to 8, attracting some 600 exhibitors and thousands of experts and professionals in the telecommunication sector.
